Hua Hin overview

Hua Hin is a beach town about 200 km south of Bangkok — 3 hours by car, 4 by train. It was Thailand's first seaside resort, historically popular with Thai royalty, and has built into one of the country's largest expat communities outside of Bangkok.

The expat community is older and more settled than Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Primarily retirees and couples, with a smaller contingent of remote workers. The social scene is quieter than Bangkok — golf, beach clubs, markets, and restaurants rather than rooftop bars and nightclubs.

Rent in Hua Hin

Hua Hin offers significantly more space for less money than Bangkok. Houses with gardens are a realistic option for retirees. The trade-off is that you need a vehicle since there's no rail network.

Transport in Hua Hin

There is no BTS, MRT, or equivalent. You need a vehicle. Most expats use a scooter, a car, or both. This is a real difference from Bangkok — it adds a fixed cost that isn't optional.

Scooter rental (monthly)3,000–5,000 THB
Scooter purchase (new)40,000–70,000 THB
Car rental (monthly)12,000–20,000 THB
Grab / local taxi (short trip)50–150 THB
Bus to Bangkok (Mochit terminal)180–250 THB
Train to Bangkok90–300 THB

Healthcare in Hua Hin

Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin is the main private hospital and handles most expat healthcare needs well — general medicine, specialist consultations, emergency care. Quality is good for a town this size.

For complex procedures, major surgery, or specialist care beyond what Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin offers, most expats go to Bangkok (Bumrungrad, Samitivej). That's a 2.5–3 hour drive or a short domestic flight. This is a real consideration for older retirees who may need specialist care more frequently.

Comprehensive international health insurance remains essential. See the retirement budget guide for realistic health insurance cost ranges by age.
